Before we talk about what’s the best situation for using Metal CBN grinding wheel, I’d like to share you some knowledge about Bond.
Grinding wheel is made by abrasive (Such as CBN abrasive) and bond (Such as Metal bond). Both of them have a great impact on the grinding wheel. For Abrasive, as mentioned in previous articles, we have already talked about it many time. This one is not repeated (Please refer to the previous article If you need). Regarding to the bond, Here is a detailed description as below:
Bond/ Binder is an indispensable part of the production of abrasive tools. Its function is to make the abrasive grain into a certain geometric shape, and hold the abrasive grain to bear the grinding force in the process. There are Four main types of superhard abrasive bond: Resin Bond, Ceramic Bond, Metal Bond and Electroplated. How to choose the appropriate Bond is based on its own performance and processing requirements for grinding tools.
1. Resin Bond
Resin Bond has good elasticity and polishing effect. After it is produced to grinding tool, it will still have a good self-sharpening. Its advantages including: not easy jam, less dressing, and high grinding efficiency, low grinding temperature, its grinding surface roughness is high. So its application range is very wide.
Diamond grinding wheel with Resin Bond is often used for grinding hard alloy workpiece, steel-base hard alloy workpiece and semi-fine grinding of some non-metallic materials, etc.
CBN grinding wheel with resin bond is mainly used for grinding high vanadium high speed steel tools, tool steel, die steel, stainless steel, etc. But the resin binder has a poor ability of control abrasive and poor heat resistance. This cause some abrasive wear when the temperature is high. Especially when it is heavy load grinding. Under this satiation, we often use metal coating to improve.
2. Ceramics Bond
The binding strength of Ceramics Bond is better than Resin Bond. After it is produced to grinding tool, the working surface of chip performance will be good. So it is difficult to jam. Its advantages including: sharp cutting, high grinding efficiency, and the thermal expansion amount is small, easy to control the machining accuracy. These characteristics are good for grinding process smoothly. And It is easy to operate on the shaping and dressing of the grinding tools. It is generally used for rough grinding, semi-fine grinding, and the forming grinding of the contact surface.
3. Metal Bond
There are two kinds of metal bond: bronze bond and electroplating.
Electroplated bond is a kind of combined with higher bond strength, general grinding single layer or multi-layer plating on metal substrate by electroplating.
This kind of bond abrasive work on the surface of grinding grain number per unit area is much taller than other kinds of binder, and grits are bare the binder surface, thus it has sharp cutting, high grinding efficiency characteristics. But the thickness of the coating is limited, so the total service life is not high. Generally it used for special purpose processing, such as molding grinding tools, small grinding head, pulverizing knife, electroplating reamer, file, etc.
Along with the advance of technique level, CBN (cubic boron nitride) plating metal bond grinding tools are used more and more. Especially in the processing of steel parts of holes, when the cavity is more outstanding, not only high grinding efficiency, good economy, but also achieve better shape accuracy.
Bronze bond grinding tools based on copper powder, tin powder as main material and other materials. The combination of this kind of abrasive and abrasive grain is high in combination strength, good wear resistance and small wear. So the service life is long and the shape can be kept in good shape, so it can withstand a great load. However, the disadvantage is that the self-property is weak, the surface is easy to clog, the fever is large, and the modification is very difficult. It is mainly used for glass, ceramic, stone, building materials, concrete, semiconductor materials and other non-metallic materials of coarse grinding, fine grinding and cutting process; a few used in hard alloy, composite superhard material grinding, and a variety of honing, electrolytic grinding, etc.
