Here, we would like to share with you some knowledge of the CBN grinding wheel:
What is CBN? And what is a CBN Grinding wheel?
CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) is a kind of Abrasive. It is artificial abrasive made from water and its hardness just lower than diamond abrasive. So it is widely used in grinding industry. Abrasive and bond can be made a grinding wheel through pressed and sintering. CBN grinding wheel means this wheel is made by CBN abrasive.
There are many kinds of abrasive, including Diamond, CBN, Corundum, Silicon carbide and so on. Diamond and CBN belong to superhard materials. The obvious difference between the superhard material grinding wheel and the ordinary grinding wheel is the appearance: Diamond/CBN grinding wheel can be divided into two parts—Abrasive layer and substrate(Aluminum/Steel body); Common grinding wheel, its whole is abrasive layer, without substrate.

The manufacturing process of grinding wheel
As above, grinding wheel is mainly made by abrasive and bond. Abrasive and bond can be made a grinding wheel through pressed and sintering.
Before produce a grinding wheel, we have to choose abrasive and bond according to customer’s requirement. Different abrasive and bond have different characteristic, they suitable for different workpiece and grinding method.
How should we choose a abrasive?
There are two steps to choosing the right abrasive: Choosing the right kind of abrasive and choosing the right grain size of the abrasive.
Choosing the right kind of abrasive: We choose abrasive according to the workpiece’s characteristic (Such as their hardness). This is a very professional knowledge. You can inform professionals (Like us), we can recommend for you.
Choosing the right grain size of the abrasive: Grain size means the size of abrasive grit. The larger grain size refer to faster Work efficiency, while the surface finish will be more rough. So, we have to choose it based on the actual situation. Generally, the processing requires more than one process. Sometimes, we have to start with a large/coarse grain and then grind with small/fine grain size. This is related to machining allowance and surface finish and so on.
How should choose a right Bond?
You can think of it as a special glue. It's solid at room temperature. (In grinding wheel industry, generally, we have to use resin solid powder.) While, When we increase the temperature and when temperature reaches its melting point, it will become liquid. Then it will glue the abrasive particles together. At this time, we have to keep to increasing the temperature, then it will solidify again. (Put it and the abrasive in a mold, they will be made into a fixed shape).
Different Bond has different adhesion and the ability to maintain the shape of the wheel. So, It also is a great factor which can affect dressing, grind effect and using life.
PS: Different shapes of grinding wheel are suitable for different processing modes. Such as: Parallel grinding wheel is suitable for grinding plane, outer circle and inner circle; Cup wheel is suitable for grinding the end surface; The slanting abrasive layer or abrasive layer with angle is suitable for grinding groove, tooth, etc.
